Tracking My Study: Physics

Posted: May 16th, 2011 | Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized | No Comments »

Today , I’ll post my Physics statistics. Explanations as in previous posts

Total Electronic Study Time

44.3 Hours [this is time spent looking at questions on flashcards, but not the time seeing the answers]

Card Maturity
Mature cards: 635 (91.2%)
Young cards: 61 (8.8%)
Unseen cards: 0 (0.0%)
Average interval: 118.2 days [this is average time between seeing each flashcard - an achievement after 8 months of use! This average means I won't ever need to see around 70% of the flashcards before the leaving certificate]

Correct Answers
Mature cards: 95.0% (1285 of 1352)
Young cards: 92.0% (3017 of 3278)
First-seen cards: 74.9% (524 of 700)

Total Study Time [again, the huge spike was the mocks :P ]

Leaving Cert Nears…

Posted: May 12th, 2011 | Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

Hi, after a really long hiatus, I shall start blogging again. It will begin with at least the daily statistics of my study patterns.

The Idea of this is to keep track of how much I study through the electronic medium, and how good a predictor these results are for the leaving certificate after approximately 8 months of electronic collection. It works on the basis of S.R.S. [Spaced Repetition System], which shows me flashcards when I am most likely to forget that fact.

Today I’ll post about geography (my second worst subject after English!). [All of these stats come from Anki by the way].

Total Electronic Study Time

68.8 Hours [this is time spent looking at questions on flashcards, but not the time seeing the answers]

Card Maturity
Mature cards: 947 (73.4%) [Greater than 30 days before I see them again = I won't see most of these again before leaving cert as I should know them with a reliability of the 'mature card' statistic below]
Young cards: 319 (24.7%) [Less than 30 days  in the interval]
Unseen cards: 25 (1.9%)
Average interval: 59.8 days [This is the average time before I see a flashcard again]

Correct Answers
Mature cards: 81.5% (1091 of 1339) [>30 Days]
Young cards: 86.1% (7259 of 8428) [<30 Days - This result shows my continued effort to improve results]
First-seen cards: 47.4% (601 of 1268) [This figure is meaningless. It shows how often I get a flashcard right without ever seeing it before = No Study beforehand]

Daily Study Time over the past 3 months for Geography

That 150 minute bar is the day before my Mock exam.

Till tomorrow, where I’ll post my data for Physics.

Use this method of Study too via: http://www.gluedstudy.com [my own development]

Tea. Coffee. Dublin.

Posted: October 29th, 2009 | Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized | 2 Comments »

I went up to Dublin today – from Kilkenny – It’s all the usual hassle getting up early, arriving at Heuston wrecked and spending a Day alternating between tea, coffee and shopping (time leaning towards tea/coffee…).

Interruption – I writing from the train :D ! (Bought a 3G modem yesterday…) – Read On…

Later we went into a French Tea shop – sells everything – so we stocked up on some real Earl Grey and left. I later found (In a coffee shop) a left-let in the bag detailing some of the rare Teas they supply.

Cast Iron Kettle.

Rare and Ephemeral Teas

Yong Xi Huo Qing

This tea lives up to it’s name. Originating… BLah etc.

Price/100g: €35.00

What I just cannot understand is how this lives up to its name (and it’s price). If anyone can decipher the title I’ll… I’ll give them a golden star.

I’m working on a Max 1 month between post schedule. It could be less but never more.

“Out, Out -”

(cc) photine

This is my first blog post – hope it goes somewhat well.

Anybody doing the Leaving Cert for 2011 should recognize the title, maybe even those who have read Macbeth. I’ve become more interested in English classes as of starting 5th Year. Up until my Junior Cert, I had a good yet verrrrrry boring English teacher. He speaks in a deep monotone – the falling asleep of students in 3rd year while in his class was not unheard of (if not even regular). My new teacher makes everything animated – I barely notice the 45 minutes passing. He manages to make poems interesting, which is a pretty hard thing do…

We even started debating the meaning of the title of a poem up into philosophical meanings.

The title of “Out, Out -” by Robert Frost contains so much more than what it seems to be. It is a quote from Macbeth by Shakespeare. Macbeth is very deep in his depression.

“Out, Out brief candle; life’s but a waking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

That quote has one of the deepest meaning of any part of Shakespeare’s works. Life is as fragile as a candle. It both easily be started and easily ended. Everyone thinks that they are the centre of the world – everything revolves around you. Yet many people waste all their opportunities to make any real contribution to the world – because of what other people will think if it goes wrong. Yet think about it; if it fails the word may spread; but where to? It probably won’t go further than your town or city. How big is your town or city compared to the whole country?  How big is this country – it’s only a tiny nation hanging on the west of Europe.

- Most People overrate their importance.

Too Many people just get born and die – “life’s a waking shadow, a poor player [actor] … frets his hour upon the stage”. Shakespeare tells us too many people waste their life on this planet.

The truth had to come out. How many opportunities did you not take in life. Did you many even regret some of them. Sometime in life people will always get chance to improve humanity – and get remembered for it.

Take it.
